Kellermeier Real Estate Inspections: How Camera Technologies Protect You

If you’ve watched any of HGTV’s popular shows about purchasing property, remodeling or anything involving real estate inspections, odds are you’ve seen this scene or one like it.

General Contractor – “You’ve got a big problem.”Real Estate Inspections

Co-host – “What now?”

GC – “There is a broken sewer line.”

Co-host – “You have got to be kidding me.”

After a commercial break, the camera pans the side of the house and reveals a giant trench extending from the backyard to the street. What the television show doesn’t show you is the plumbing company called in to fix the problem.

Reality Plumbing with Kellermeier Plumbing, Inc.

While a broken sewer line can be costly to repair, having a broken sewer line doesn’t automatically mean your entire yard must be dug up. And when a trench is required for the repair, Kellermeier Plumbing does its best to keep the channel as small as possible. Rarely does a sewer pipe repair require the amount of digging you see on TV, and that’s due, in part, to Kellermeier’s use of the latest camera and locator technology.

Since 2011, Kellermeier Plumbing has been using cameras to inspect and make video recordings in drains and drain lines (including sewer drains). The camera and locator technology allow Kellermeier Plumbing’s licensed, bonded, and insured team members to pinpoint clogs or holes in sewer pipes without having to dig up the entire pipe.

When the problem is in the sewer line, Blaine Kellermeier says, “We can chase the camera line down in there until we find the problem. Then, when we find it, we can use the locator
to pinpoint where the camera is and either clean the pipe or dig it up and repair it.” With the video camera and locator technology that Kellermeier Plumbing uses, inspecting drains and sewer pipes is significantly easier than it used to be.

When you’ve made an offer on the house but before your contractor says ‘You’ve got a problem,” call Kellermeier Plumbing. Our camera and locator inspection services will help you avoid purchasing a home with broken lines.

Healthy or Harmful? A Drinking Water Dilemma

Water Filtration Systems Matter Regardless of Where You Live

The recent water crisis in Flint, Michigan has opened our eyes to the perils of poor water filtration. If this is happening on the other side of our state, could it happen here? Is our drinking water clean? Should I call Kellermeier?

The answer is Yes.

It could happen here

According to the news division of National Geographic, millions of Americans, primarily in the Midwest and Northeast, drink water that flows through lead pipes, and many cities across the U. S. could face a similar water crisis like the one that happened recently in Flint.

Our drinking water is clean … ishWater filtration

Many city water filtration plants treat water with anti-corrosion chemicals such as sodium hexametaphosphate prevent the leaching of lead from pipes into public water systems. So, no lead.

But what are the long-term effects of drinking water that contains chemicals and how many other chemicals are there in our water supply? The New York Times reports,

Only 91 contaminants are regulated by the Safe Drinking Water Act, yet more than 60,000 chemicals are used within the United States, according to Environmental Protection Agency estimates.”

And while the world’s largest bottled water company is located in Michigan, unfortunately, the federal government does not mandate that bottled water be any safer than tap water.

You should call Kellermeier

Proudly serving the Greater Grand Rapids area since 1996, Kellermeier Plumbing provides water filtration services to business and residential customers.

Utilizing the newest technology available, we recommend Sterling water filtration products to treat acid water, high iron, arsenic, nitrates, sulfates, manganese, rotten egg odor, sediment, and chlorine.

Hydro Jetting Drain Cleaning

Efficient, Economical & Environmentally Safe

The better option for removing clogs and cleaning your pipes is Kellermeier Plumbing’s hydro jetting drain cleaning. Using state of the art equipment and flexible hoses, Kellermeier Plumbing’s expert technicians will shoot highly pressurized water through your pipes.

During the cleaning process, forward and reverse jets direct the powerful cleansing water to break through even the toughest blockages. Pressure washing the inside of the pipes, hydro jetting drain cleaning penetrates and emulsifies grease, breaks up sludge, pulverizes debris, crushes tree and shrub roots, and even washes out pipe scaling.

Because your pipes are made to handle water flowing through them, high-pressure water jetting is the most efficient, economical, and environmentally safe way to clean your pipes.

We wash dishes, shower and bathe, brush our teeth, and use the restroom every day without ever giving a thought to our plumbing.

Underneath our houses, sanitary branch lines flow from the restrooms into a large drain pipe, the main line. Kitchen lines from sinks and dishwashers generally flow through a grease trap before they also feed into the main line. Food particles and grease create sludge.

Sludge and paper products build up slowly in your pipes. And one day, a clog forms.

Common Clog Causes

The most common causes of backups in your pipes are paper products, tree and shrub roots, and sludge. Generally, the first solution you turn to when drains are clogged is a chemical drain cleaner. But while it may dissolve the sludge, it is also harmful to the environment.

Unfortunately, chemical drain cleaners are just a stopgap measure. Paper products and roots are not affected by the chemicals. Eventually, the blockage returns, and it’s usually worse than the first clog.

Snaking Works Better Than Chemicals

At this point, the conventional way to open the drain is snaking it with a metal cable.

By forcing a cable back and forth through the pipes with a spinning motion, snaking breaks up the blockage and opens the pipeline. More effective than chemicals, snaking the pipes can do a good job of removing soft stoppage and paper products. But the metal cable can also get stuck and bind up with the roots.

And when the cable hits a pipe fitting, it can damage your plumbing.

Unfortunately, even though snaking the pipes opens them, a lot of debris is left behind. The blockage is not gone. It’s just spread out. And sooner or later, generally within a few months, you’ll have to snake the lines again.

When the sink or shower doesn’t drain and you’re afraid to flush, it’s time to completely flush out your system with Kellermeier Plumbing’s Hydro Jetting Drain Cleaning.

After all, a straight flush is better than a full house. Call Kellermeier today.

Drains Drain and Drains Clog – It’s What They Do

If we could invent a clog-proof drain, believe us, we would. Until we do, you can trust Kellermeier Plumbing for taking care of your drain cleaning services.

Nobody talks much about drains these days, and there’s a good reason for that. There’s just not much to say. Drains drain. It’s what they do. And as long as they’re working, there’s not really much to talk about. It’s a different story when your drains clog – and nobody wants to talk about that either. But drains clog. It’s also what they do.

It doesn’t matter what’s gone down the drain

Kellermeier’s cleaning professionals will clean it for you. We provide state of the art drain cleaning services for both residential and light commercial business locations. With video inspection and line location, we are able to find and fix a clog anywhere in your drainage system from the kitchen sink to the main sewage line and everywhere in between.

Clogged drains are works in progress

And they’re always in progress. Soap scum accumulates. Food debris goes down the kitchen drain. Dust, dirt, and lint drain along with the soapy water from your washing machine. And, then there’s the bathroom. Over time, it all builds up on the inner walls of your pipes. After a while, your drains start running slower and slower and s-l-o-w-e-r… But you don’t need to wait till for a backup to call Kellermeier. Regular maintenance is essential to keeping your plumbing working properly, and the best time to fix your drain problem is before it is completely blocked.

At Kellermeier Plumbing, we strive to provide our clients with same day service. So, whether you need drain cleaning services for a single drain or sewer cleaning services for your entire house or business, give us a call. We will evaluate the problem, locate and remove the blockage, and clean your pipes. By the time we’re done, your drains will be fully functional once again. The only difference will be that the next time someone mentions a clogged drain, you’ll be talking about Kellermeier Plumbing!

Get Rid of that Stinky Kitchen Sink

Get Rid of that Stinky Kitchen Sink

Do you have a bad smell coming from your kitchen sink? This most likely is caused by food stuck down in your garbage disposal or drain. While it doesn’t often happen, sometimes residue builds up, or you accidentally put something down it that you weren’t supposed to. Regardless of how it happened, it’s time to get rid of it! Below are three different methods you can try to remove the smell.

1. Hot Water and Dish Soap
Perhaps the easiest option is to create a soap and water mix and have it run through your drain while the garbage disposal is turned on. Rather than just letting the faucet run though, put a stopper in the drain and allow the sink to fill up with hot water. After you add in the dish soap, turn on the disposal and remove the stopper. This allows the disposal to fill up with water instead of running right through it.

2. Vinegar and Baking Soda
You likely have these ingredients already in the house, making this another easy option. For stinky sinks, a two-to-one ratio of vinegar to baking soda might just do the trick. First, pour a half cup of baking soda down the drain and let it sit for a couple of minutes. Follow that with a cup of vinegar and watch it foam, but this time let the solution sit a little bit longer—around 10 to 15 minutes. Finally, wash the mix down with hot water.

3. Commercial Cleaner
Another option to consider is a commercial product designed for cleaning out drains. This could function as a backup option if nothing else works, or you can pass on the homemade remedies and go with the stronger stuff.

(Bonus) Ice Cubes
By themselves, ice cubes won’t necessarily remove a smell from a drain. However, you can use ice cubes to knock stubborn food particles off disposal blades. Put some down the disposal and chop them up, but follow this method with one of the above to thoroughly clean the drain.

If you have tried numerous times but still can’t get rid of the smell, it may be a chance to bring in the professionals, and we would love to help. Give Kellermeier Plumbing a call anytime at 616-866-5134.

Top 6 Things to Look for When Hiring a Plumber

Top 6 Things to Look for When Hiring a Plumber

Have you ever had a drain that you just couldn’t get unclogged? Even with the strongest of clog removers the water just sits in your sink or tub. That may be a sign that it is time to call in the professionals! Before you hire someone though, make sure you check that the company you are considering meets the criteria listed below.

Price should not be the number one determining factor when hiring a plumber, but you don’t want to get ripped off or sacrifice in the quality of work. Discuss the cost up front to identify if you’ll be able to stick close to your budget. Tip: Make sure you get a written estimate ahead of time. If they don’t offer one, you might want to look elsewhere as they might try and charge you more than initially quoted.

The more experience a plumber has, the more likely they will do the job well and get it done right the first time. It usually means the company has a strong track record.

Knowledge of Problem
A good plumber should be able to identify your problem and come up with a solution. They should also be able to explain to you what the issue is and how they plan to tackle it.

If a company does not offer a warranty or guarantee with their work, you should move on to the next one. Plumbers should stand behind their work!

What do past clients have to say? What type of ratings does the company have? If a company has only bad reviews or doesn’t have any at all, you may want to seek an alternative. This could be a sign that they provide bad service or don’t have much experience.

License and Insurance
In Michigan, plumbers need the proper license to work in homes or businesses. In addition, they should have insurance to cover you and themselves in the event of any accidents.

You don’t want to rush into hiring a plumber if you don’t have to. Do your due diligence to ensure that the company you might hire meets the criteria on the list above—like us! At Kellermeier, we have been proudly serving West Michigan as licensed, insured, and bonded plumbers since 1996. We work with you to make sure that we are always on the same page and guarantee the work we do, but if anything goes wrong, we will make it right. Give us a call today at 616-866-5134!
