When there’s a foul odor coming from either your bathroom sink or kitchen sink, it can hit your nose like a ton of bricks. It is rarely expected that your sink drain will be the source of foul smells, but you will want to work to remove that smell quickly before it gets worse.

A bad smelling drain is actually more common than you think. When there are clogs or other waste in the drain, they can hang around for a while, and when they do, that smell gets stronger. Deodorizing your drain can be done in the same way that you would clear any other clog.

If simply running hot water down the drain won’t clear it out, you can resort to the classic science fair volcano method involving baking soda and vinegar. First, boil a pot of water and then pour that hot water down the drain. Follow that up by combining one cup of baking soda with two cups of vinegar. You can plug the drain and then let the reaction do its work.

When the bubbling has subsided, and the clog is likely cleared, you can then again flush out the sink and the sink with hot water. Then, you can add routine deodorizing to your cleaning schedule. A quick method for maintaining a clean sink is to dump about a tablespoon of baking soda into the drain once a week.

Regular maintenance won’t always come through for your kitchen sink, and when that happens you can look to a couple other methods of clearing out a clog and removing the awful smell. One way to do so is by filling your sink with hot, soapy water, then flushing the garbage disposal with the solution.

For clearing off gunk from the blades of your garbage disposal, dump a few ice cubes down there with some salt and turn it on. You can also grind up a lemon peel and flush it out with hot water, leaving you with a fresher smell.

There are some signs that you may need to bring in a plumber to remedy a bad smelling drain. For instance, in your drain smells like a sewer, multiple drains have the same bad smell, or if there is water backing up, you will want to bring in a professional.
