Many times when your chores come around, cleaning the bathroom is on that list. Often you will try to be quick about it, but only clean the surfaces. What you should also do is check in on your plumbing, to not only clean your drains, but to prevent possible clogs or other serious issues.

Ignoring your drains allows gunk and grime to build up. If you wait too long to clear out the gunk, then a tough clog will form within your pipes. You should already have everything you need to ensure that your drain stays clear and worry-free.

The first step is to pour half a cup of baking soda into the drain. Next, pour a half cup of white vinegar into the drain and let that sit for 15 minutes. As you wait, boil about one cup of water, and then pour the hot water into the drain. The reaction between the baking soda and the white vinegar should break up anything that is building up, and the hot water helps to flush it away.

Beneath your sinks is a curved pipe, commonly referred to as the p-trap. The curve of the trap is meant to hold water that flows down the drain, and the air seal it creates helps to prevent sewer gases and bad odors from rising up through the drain. When that trap holds more than just water, the clog creates slow drains, or no flow at all.

With some rubber gloves and a bucket, you can get beneath your sink and remove the p-trap yourself to check on a possible clog. Loosen the nuts and pour everything into the bucket. You should be able to easily see if anything is caught inside. Clean out the trap and then reattach it to complete the job.

You need proper ventilation in your bathroom to help prevent mold growth. However, mold has taken hold in your shower, and particularly in your shower grout. If that mold spreads, then it can create health problems for you and your family.

With that same white vinegar as before, you can fill a spray bottle and apply the solution directly on the spots you want to clean. Then, using a coarse scrub brush, or even an old toothbrush, you can scrub away the mold. While you are in there, you might reapply or replace any caulk that has been worn out through the years.

None of these added cleaning steps should take you very long. But remember, cleaning and maintaining your plumbing is quicker, and much cheaper, than having to call a professional.
