Over the years, you may have acquired new tools or hardware that have been necessary for some home projects. Some of these tools have only one specific purpose, but others are more versatile and can apply to many jobs. One item that you may not have yet is plumber’s putty, but there are plenty of reasons to keep it on hand.

Plumber’s putty provides many advantages when you need to do some work around the house. The putty is a moldable substance that is perfect for sealing plumbing fixtures because it won’t shrink, dry out, harden, or crumble. Not only does this make better seals, but it still allows you to remove components easily later on.

You want to use plumbers putty around toilets and drains to protect against leaks. Because leaks can be common and dangerous, you want to prevent them at all costs. That is why using a plumber’s putty is important.

However, there are some situations where a putty should not be used. Plumber’s putty is not designed for sealing pipe threads because it has the wrong consistency. Instead, in those situations you will want to use teflon tape.

Plumber’s putty should also not be used around marble or granite countertops because of the oil used along with its clay base. In those areas, you should instead use a silicone or water based version. Same with working around stainless steel, as there are specific putties designed for that material.

At first glance, you might wonder how this putty will fit with the fixtures. Using putty needs a little work, and you can soften it up by warming the putty with your hands and rolling it into a ball. Once it has softened and stretched, cover the required area that needs to be sealed. The putty can either be shaped like a snake or pressed flat.

Apply plumber’s putty only on clean areas. A gentle soap and water mixture is just fine when prepping the area. But the area does need to be dried very well as plumber’s putty will not stick to wet surfaces. Not much is needed, and you should not create multiple layers with the putty. Use just enough to create a firm seal.
